How to get rid of "Acid Reflux Rebound"
Many people who suffer from acid reflux problem really wish to get off the proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPI drugs). This group of medicines on long run reduces the production of gastric acids. Such medicines include Prevacid, Prilosec, Nexium and Protonix.
These medicines are easy to use and effective at the initial stages, but the
side effects outweigh the benefits. Once you start using them, it is not easy to
stop also.
These PPI drugs are supposed to be used for a definite period of time, however
many people continue to use it on a regular basis. Even the physicians abuse the
medicines. So far no studies are done to understand the effect on long-term use
of these medicines. Really people should question about the long-term use of
these medicines.
We all are aware of the fact that a reduction in stomach acid will result in
improper digestion and assimilation of the food we eat. Chronic users of these
drugs are sure to have malnutrition. It is also important to know that presence
of stomach acids keep the intestinal bacteria under control. Ultimately it will
lead to an acid reflux hell.
When one stop these medicines then the acid pump will start again with a
vengeance and produce more acids than ever before. This condition is called as
"acid reflux rebound". This is such a frustrating and terrible experience that
most people soon gets back on the drugs. This "catch 22" is a golden opportunity
for pharmaceutical companies, and they make billions of dollars as profit every
year.
It is really horrible to be in such a situation. You know you want to stop these
drugs. But you are asked to double the dose. When you make an effort to stop it,
it backfires on you. Your throat will burn like as if on a fire and your doctor
will insist you to continue the drugs, otherwise you may develop esophageal
cancer. Wouldn't you be frightened?
There is good news! There are non- pharmaceutical means that can help you in
surviving the "acid reflux rebound" and get yourself in to the right track.
At this stage the esophagus is likely to be damaged. One can't imagine
recovering unless the esophagus is cured. To heal the esophagus certain things
are to be considered. First and the most important thing to change is the diet.
By now every one must be aware of the food and drinks that trigger their acid
reflux. Use mild and easy to digest food in place of that.
You can have salads in place of pizza with acidic tomato sauce. Instead of a cup
of coffee in the morning you can have a cup of tea. Have white wine instead of
red wine at dinner. These are all just based on common sense, but are very
important during the recovery period.
In order get rid of
acid reflux syndrome, it is required to become alkaline in
nature. There for any things that have acidic effect on the body should be
avoided. Smoking needs to be avoided as it is very much acidic in nature. Eating
too much food at a time is not good as it causes over production of stomach
acids. Aerobic exercises are best to make body alkaline.
Drinking sufficient quantity of fresh water can help in flushing out the acidic
toxins, which are accumulated in our body. A properly hydrated body can never be
acidic in nature. A glass of water after food is good but drinking too much in
between the food will have a negative effect. This will dilute the acids
required for proper digestion and cause the stomach to produce more acid.
I don't know whether you believe this, chewing gum between meals is very
beneficial. Chewing will increase the production of more saliva, which is
alkaline in nature. Chewing gum after meal puts more alkalinity in the stomach
which will counteract on the over production of acids.
So many natural ingredients are available at grocery and health stores which can
help in the recovery period. Herbs like marshmallow and slippery elm have real
healing properties. Licorice, natural honey and aloe vera juice are best to
soothe the esophageal lining and assist in healing process.
There are some cases of acid reflux, which can't be treated effectively without
knowing the proper causes. Simple things like eating slowly, chewing the food
well and eating in a pleasant atmosphere can reduce the possibility of having
acid reflux.
We don't have to become the prisoners of this "acid reflux rebound" condition
created by the drugs. It is very unfortunate to know that many doctors depend
only on pharmaceuticals as a solution to the acid reflux condition.
