The Relationship Between
Asthma and
Acid Reflux
Over the last few
hundreds of years, the atmosphere people
live in has changed drastically. Human
beings pollute the environment a lot through
their activities all over the world.
Many people are getting diseases as a result
of this changed environment. In this
situation, you have almost no chance of not
getting sick.
Asthma is one disease which is related
directly to pollution. It is a common
disease whose symptoms include difficulty in
breathing, wheezing, resistance to airflow,
frequent bouts of allergies, over
responsiveness to stimuli and problems
during night.
Gastro-esophageal reflux (GERD), commonly
known as acid reflux, is closely related
to asthma. If you get heartburn more
than twice a week, then you have a very good
chance of having acid reflux. One of the
main
symptoms of acid reflux is heart burn.
This feeling is caused when the esophagus
walls are burned with the acids formed in
your stomach.
Asthma and acid reflux are
believed to be related, even if there are no
published studies which proved this case.
Most doctors agree the fact that asthma gets
really bad if you have acid reflux. Why is
it so?
Without
treatment acid reflux is going to get
worse. There are cases when the stomach
acids will reach your lungs and your mouth
as well.
Researchers have found that the addition of
acidic material in to asthmatic people's
gullets worsens their asthma symptoms. Hence
the conclusion is that people with asthma
have much more chance of having GERD. The
researchers explained this as caused by the
size change in the patients chest because of
the high pressure while the patient
breathes. The increased pressure is the
villain here which forces the acidic liquid
to go up to the lungs.
Asthmatic people should try to avoid acid
reflux. But unfortunately, they are the ones
who are going to bear the wrath of the
problem.
Continuing studies which are being conducted
to prove the correlation between asthma
and acid reflux in the belief that they
are related. But so far the results were
inconclusive or negative.
In case you are suffering from asthma and
acid reflux, it is a good idea to consult a
doctor. The doctor would advice to deal with
the problems associated with your asthma and
acid reflux. Over the counter medicines is
not at all advised.
The
medicines the doctor could give you
include the likes of adrenaline and
hydrocortisone. They are both preventive
medicines for asthma. This is given with the
assumption that if you can get hold of
asthma, you can get hold of acid reflux
also. Medicines which you can breath in are
better than pills since they have less side
effects and they are administered straight
to the lungs. Ask your doctor if you want to
try some other medicines.
Asthma changes with your age also. Some
children will lose the symptoms when they
grow up. But as they grow in to their middle
ages, their asthma will come back to haunt
them. Adults who have asthma tend to suffer
it for the rest of their life even with the
use of medications. Only thing you can do is
to reduce the inflammation of the airway as
much as possible.
In either case, if you have asthma or
acid reflux, you need to get proper
treatment from a qualified doctor. Never
wait until the symptoms worsens in to really
serious stage. You need to treat it in the
starting stages itself, while it is
treatable.
