The buffet table is really a feast not only to the eye but also to your taste palate as well. And often times, we find ourselves overstuffing with almost every item we see since, well, it is a smorgasbord of food anyway.
Then, after stuffing yourself, you find yourself feeling that heart attack-like pain. You though you’re going to have a heart attack. And, every time that you hit the buffet same thing happens. You check with the doc. And what did he say? Heartburn. And chances are, your habit of overeating and feasting are coming back to haunt you. So you ask the doc, does eating give me the burn?
Good question. And your doctor will tell you, first, that the sensation has nothing to do with your heart. In fact, heartburn is a misnomer. It’s actually happens when your stomach acid seeps out of its rightful area and just burns your esophagus. But what causes heartburn? A lot of things. But given your eating habits, some foods that you love eating may be the culprit. A sudden wave of terror hits: You picture a celery and carrot diet. The good news? You have greater liberty and freedom than what you actually think. Here’s a list of food that you may want to get off your plate to prevent heartburn.
The Reality: You May Be Eating Too Much
Experts at WebMD.com said that preventing heartburn is not really about preventing a specific food group. It’s really about learning how you think about food and how much enough is really enough. By simply curbing what’s in your plate, you never have to miss a slice of your favorite rich, moist chocolate cake every week. And when it comes to your risk of feeling that heart attack-like pain, it’s really the volume of food that matters. If the lady at the counter asks if you want to go large, forget about it. Moderation is the key to keeping both your taste palate and esophagus happy. So whether it is your favorite burger or serving of fries, keeping things in moderation is they key to prevent heartburn.
Don’t Be On The Rush When Eating
You’re late. But you know that breakfast is the most essential meal of the day. So you pour yourself a bowl of cereal and clean it in less than five minutes. Rushing, and especially eating on the go, seemed like an essential part of this fast phase world. If you spend 6 days a week doing the same thing, chances are you are suffering from heartburn. In fact, taming heartburn requires you enjoying your food, not shoveling it down for the sake of filling your stomach. Three things I tell people to avoid: Grab, gulp, and go. If you want to tame your heartburn symptoms, you must start mind what you and how you eat, says Leslie Bonci of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Be In The Watch Of Fat
Everybody enjoys a fast food fare once in a while. I mean, they may not be the best burgers in town but they do have some great things going on in them. But unfortunately, high in fat foods are one of the major DON’Ts of taming and preventing heartburn. That’s because they stay in our digestive system longer. And, once they linger right there, the more symptoms and discomfort you are going to bear, says Bonci. And, worse, if you are getting the bucketful of chips, fries, chicken wings, then you’re more likely to get your esophagus in big trouble. Again, that’s like hitting two birds with one stone, only this time in calling for heartburn – going for the fatty menu and eating too much.

Checking Chocolates
The main thing that makes chocolate a major heartburn DON’T? The caffeine in it. And, you know better when the doc says to reduce your daily caffeine intake. But what if you have a sweet tooth – just like the rest of us? If you can’t simply resist chocolates, you have to cut back, and see if it helps you with your symptoms, notes Dr. Brunilda Nazario, an internist and endocrinology consultant. But even if you take your favorite chocolate serving once a week, you better watch your portion size too. A nibble, a bar may be healthy. And always have that picture in mind – are you eating that chocolate cake as a sweet, sumptuous ender to a fast food fare? Or, are you eating that rich, moist chocolate cake without having to eat a healthy meal before it? Bottom line is, check what other factor may play in and trigger your heartburn?
When Getting Hot (Or, Cool) Is Not Good
If you love spicy flare, chances are you’ll love your food spicier than most people can actually take. And all that palate-burning buffet items may get your heartburn all heated. Spicy items, hot sauces, peppery food can actually get your heartburn more burning. But it’s not all that spices we are talking. Another item that may be triggering your heartburn is peppermint. Cut back on your after-dinner mints and see if it works. These refreshing nibbles may be cool enough to get your esophageal sphincter too relaxed that it allowed stomach acids to just burn your esophagus. Onions and garlic are not technically hot, but these spices are flavorful enough to trigger your heartburn.
Food Tip: But who says you have to let your taste palate to suffer? Having a heartburn doesn’t mean that you have to miss all that spicy and flavor from your plate. The key is to actually turning down the heat a little. If you can’t have your chicken wings without the hot sauce, try to dip the item in it. Drowning your favorite finger food to a sauce plate full of chili is a major heartburn DON’T. Love making your very own version of hot sauce? Trim down the number of chili that you put with the rest of ingredients. Ease up and cool down. Or do happen to find the food bland that’s why you need a bottle full of chili to take the flavor a little bit? You need to learn how to put flavor in your food. Chili does take the flavor to your tongue. But there are really thousands of ways on how to throw flavor and boldness in your food aside from chili, notes Bonci.
Take Note
Each and one of us are really different, notes Nazario. What causes your symptoms to come about may be different from your mother, and even your friend, says Nazario. Chocolates, spices, and cola are just some of the things that may trigger your heartburn. You may have greater tolerance for coffee than other people. Or, perhaps your body is more equipped to handle garlic than that of others. Bottom line is you need to learn what triggers your heartburn and what don’t. Taking down notes and jotting down whatever you have eaten (or, done) before the symptom manifest can help you pin down what causes your heartburn. Managing heartburn requires lifestyle change. And people will have difficulty determining what works best for their condition if they will just rely on their memory, says Nazario.
Eating Tip: Chewing gum may is one of the best ways to get your stomach work faster – faster than your heartburn do gets in the way. But before you chew your way to a heartburn-free day, choose a flavor that isn’t mint or even peppermint. Remember, peppermint can relax your esophageal sphincter, which, if it does, can lead to heartburn.
