In fact, if you are one of the 15 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux or heartburn, you know that there are boundaries you now have and need to create so you can live your days free from heartburn symptoms.

And one of the most important journeys you have to walk and take is discovering the best diet for acid reflux. And this doesn’t end with knowing what food to eat; the best diet for acid reflux also considers the size and timing of your meals. This is why the American College of Gastroenterology underscores the fact that meal planning is one important step towards better managing acid reflux and heartburn.

Drink water after every meal. Though it may be really tempting to indulge in your cup of java after a wonderful meal, a tumbler full of water is your only option to get out of your usual after-meal-heartburn. Drinking a small glass of water can help dilute and, yes, even wash down any stomach acid that can be just working its way towards your esophagus.

Plan NOT to include heartburn-causing beverages. Just as you planned to commit your lunch to heartburn-friendly dishes, you may want to make sure that you only consume heartburn-friendly beverages throughout the day. Your options should only include, again, water, decaffeinated varieties of tea, mineral water, non-alcoholic beverages, noncitrus juices, and low-fat, or, better yet, nonfat milk.

Choose high fiber dishes. A recent study on the effect of one’s diet to heartburn symptoms reported that those who prefer high fiber dishes were 20 percent less likely to have acid reflux symptoms. So whether you are out dining with your friends or doing some shopping, stick to what will be best for you and your body. And the best diet for acid reflux includes a healthy portion of fruits, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, beans, and seeds every day.

Chew gum. For fresh breath, even after indulging in your fave Indian resto, make sure that you choose gum over breath mints. The nonpeppermint flavor gum encourages a healthy production of saliva, which functions as a great acid neutralizer and an agent that encourages stomach content to move into the small intestine quickly.

Stay away from LES-weakening foods like peppermint, chocolate, caffeine, and fatty foods. Aside from these items, you may also want to avoid foods that damage the esophageal lining like citrus juice, tomato juice, black pepper, and chili peppers.

Watch your portions. Again, the best diet for acid reflux includes carefully-prepared meals served in healthy portions. One of the very first things that acid reflux sufferers need to watch is essentially how much they are eating, per meal and per plate. Living a life with acid reflux shouldn’t be all about avoiding things that can be bad for you, but by living each day, each meal in moderation. When it comes to the best diet for acid reflux, a good rule of thumb is to eat less but eat more. Plan your day so you can accommodate four to five small meals instead of having three large ones every day.

Everyone I know love to eat. Even I can’t deny the fact that I classify eating good food as one of my favorite hobbies. And anyone who will disagree either hasn’t known a great meal or is just plain hypocrite. And with great food and exquisite wine, many of those who suffer from acid reflux and heartburn think that sometimes life can be just so unfair. In fact, the increasing sales and profits of antacid manufacturing companies support the fact that it is easier to just let go, forget about your condition, and just wait for the burn to kick in. But isn’t it more practical to remember foods to avoid with acid reflux and stick to what is good for you instead of spending hundred of dollars on antacids every year?

If you are relatively new to this entire acid-reflux-foods-to-avoid puzzle, then we are serving this list for you and the rest of the 15 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux and heartburn. Aside from taking your antacids wherever you go, it is important that you remember what foods to avoid with acid reflux so you don’t even have to spend on antacids in the first place.

What Is the List All About?

After you have visited your doctor, he has most probably provided you a list of foods that you should consume in moderation and what you should totally shy away from. But why is it really important for you to stick to your doctor’s advice when after all you have antacids to immediately cool the burn down? Because let’s face it: We hate the fact that we are being told of what to do; imagine what it is like for you to have someone tell you what you need to and not to eat. It can be really annoying and oftentimes frustrating to not being able to eat what you love just because someone told you it is bad for your tummy.

It is important that you consider your list of foods to avoid with acid reflux as your first step towards progress. What is fun and really great about your list is that it is non-exhaustive and not really universally applicable to all acid reflux and heartburn sufferers. In fact, what may trigger your friend’s heartburn symptoms but may not be necessarily apply to you. So welcome acid reflux as a wonderful opportunity to explore foods and beverages that will not hurt your tummy but will excite your palate as well.

Food Should Totally Avoid

Fruits. When it comes to these natural snacks, you may want to skip tangy citrus if you want to be totally burn free this year. Though fruits are generally healthy and great for anyone, heartburn and acid reflux sufferers may want to totally avoid acidic fruits like tomato, orange, grapefruit, and lemon.

Salad dressings. A spread of vegetables and fruits seemed like the best, healthiest option when you’re dining out. Greens may be healthy, but you may want check what goes in your plate. When it comes to unexpected surprises, nothing can overwhelm heartburn sufferers like salad dressings that contain highly acidic ingredients like vinegar, which is the staple in almost every salad dressing we know.

Beverages. If you are trying to lose weight and are watching empty calories, you may want to include heartburn beverages in your watchlist as well. But because there are so many beverages that came to our mind when we discussed of foods to avoid with acid reflux, we just want to share this secret: Anything that has caffeine and alcohol in it should just be added to your items-to-be-avoided list.

Sweets. Unfortunately this favorite has to be included. But don’t worry as our list (and yours too) only includes buttery and high-fat desserts. Our major dessert DON’Ts include corn chips, doughnut, brownie, and butter cookie.

Coping with acid reflux and even GERD is one thing; living with it is another. Everyday, there are at least 7 million people in the United States alone suffering from heartburn who live with hesitation and limit that they decided to put spontaneity in the back seat. No more trip to the nearest eat-all-you-can snack bar; gone are the days when a quick spree to the bar seems to be the perfect the way to cap the night. In fact, even a glass or two’ may lead to a night of gas, bloating, and burping.

But, really, having acid reflux is not as bad as you think. And with your doctor telling you that you can, indeed, have a piece of everything that you have enjoyed then — from a can of soda to, yes, even booze, you know that a life with heartburn can’t be that hard after all.

You can’t expect your doctor to hand you a magic pill when you start complaining about your heartburn symptoms. In fact, heartburn is not something you expect to get “fixed” after taking your meds. Yes, the symptoms may be reduced, but the reality is you have to live by with heartburn, unless you start making real changes in your lifestyle. Aside from all the adjustments that you have to make when preparing a meal, acid reflux may also mean introducing changes with how you live your life everyday.

Anyone who suffers from heartburn symptoms and acid reflux will tell you that their schedules and to-do lists are partly determined by their doctor’s advice. From the time you hit the gym to planning your next vacation, managing and controlling heartburn is something that you should start to live with.

If you have been living a carefree and relaxed lifestyle before your doctor confirmed that you have been suffering from heartburn, it is important that you start your journey by accepting that fact that managing your condition will take a lot of work. Changing the way you live your life is undeniably one of the hardest things that people need to accept when managing heartburn. But with patience and determination, slowly seeing how these changes will fit into the bigger and definitely better future will make you realize that all these efforts are worth it.

To each his own – a truth that speaks not only about one’s preferences but also of heartburn. You know what heartburn feels like, but what triggers your symptoms are quite unique and, in fact, different from one person to another. This is why it is almost impossible for any doctor to have a Black Book that details what food to avoid and what menu to permanently erase off your idea of a perfect dinner.

In managing your heartburn symptoms and condition, you are your doctor’s best aid: You. Aside from the fact that you don’t have a personal dietician whom your doctor can coordinate with about your diet (except, of course, if you do have one), you are the only person your doctor can rely on in remembering what food and beverages you enjoyed before your symptoms kick in. Managing heartburn requires being a mindful eater: Knowing what to eat, what to avoid, how to eat, and having the determination to stick to a heartburn-free menu. If you are new to all these, take small baby steps; start by keeping a food journal to help you and your doctor to pin down what items to avoid.

If for some people heartburn may come after gulping a soda or indulging in a plate of perfectly fried fries, your symptoms may kick in after you had that after-dinner mint. But what makes heartburn difficult to diagnose is that it can be caused by one thing today and another thing tomorrow.

Knowing which triggered the burn may be difficult if you rely on memory alone. If you are to manage heartburn and really pin down the culprit, you need to do more than just asking someone you are having dinner what you just ate before you felt the burn. It takes precision and accuracy, and for that you need to have your log book always with you. Work with your doctor and help him determine what caused and may trigger your symptoms. You need to be specific, not just I’ve-been-to-that-greasy-joint-downtown type. Write a detailed picture of your meal time: From the time you ate to what was featured in your plate to what you did after.

After a month or two, your log should be able to paint a vivid and more visible picture of your lifestyle’s relationship with your symptoms. The next step for you should be heading towards your doctor and not towards the trashcan. Your log contains everything that your doctor needs to make recommendations that go beyond antacids. Use this information to make the necessary changes with your schedule — from sleeping to travelling.

It wouldn’t and doesn’t seem fair to list down all foods that one can’t eat and not tell them what they can indulge in.

Heartburn sufferers know that living with their condition could not get any harder. Though there are a lot of foods that can trigger heartburn, it is still good to know that there are those that don’t. And don’t think that they are boring or, worse, bland. Heartburn shouldn’t deprive you of foods that taste good and make life better.

Better Alternatives

The key to enjoying a life in spite of heartburn is moderation. A generous serving of tomato-based dish and a platter of greasy spoon takeout box would do more harm than good. Aside from watching portions, mindful eating is one habit heartburn sufferers can’t live without. And mindful eating is all about knowing and then enjoying what you are about to eat.

Dining with heartburn should always start with this basic question: Will eating this give me heartburn? Eating with heartburn is always a challenge, especially since you always need to choose between what you want and what is best for you. While what triggers your symptoms may be different from others, here is a quick list of what in general is good for all heartburn sufferers.

Acidic foods. Tomato-based dishes are comforting and even healthy. But heartburn sufferers should know better. When you think pasta, don’t smother the noodle with a tomato-based sauce. Have a little less if you can’t bear the thought of missing Italian spaghetti. Add vegetables and meat. Experiment and find your comfort zone.

Beverages. Carbonated drinks, caffeinated beverages, colas, and excessive alcohol are all heartburn DON’Ts. Choose drinks that are caffeine-free and non-fizzy. Our choices include milk, herbal teas, and, of course, good ‘ol water.

Desserts. One of the very first things you should learn to stay away from is chocolate. But if you are like the rest of humankind who honestly can’t, see if cutting back helps your condition. Watching your portion size and moderation, as always, is the key to a heartburn-free post-dessert day.

Spicy foods. All those hot sauces and peppery items can trigger heartburn. So you may want to rethink your next schedule at the Indian resto. If leaving that hot item is too unbearable, you may want to ease up on the spiciness. Dip buffalo wings on hot sauce, don’t pour. Have a teaspoon not tablespoon of chili paste.

Think about your reason for liking hot and spicy numbers. If you like these dishes because they are simply flavorful, you may want to rethink if that restaurant is really good after all. There are plenty of ways to bring flavor to dishes.

Healthy numbers. Menus that are prepared healthy may and even taste better. Baked, grilled, broiled, and even roasted dishes are equally tempting and undeniably heartburn-friendly items you just need to get a sample of. Giving up on foods that you love is not and should never be an option. Preparing them differently can make a difference for heartburn, and even to your overall health.

There are at least 60 million Americans who suffer from acid reflux. And majority of them get heartburn at least once a month.

Aside from the usual symptoms, most of those with acid reflux have to suffer from nighttime symptoms, waking up in the night grabbing their chest in pain. A pain so intense most people mistake it for heart attack.

Some people with heartburn consider the pain they experience once a month to be an inconvenience they will have to live with. But for some, heartburn has proven to be more than just a nuisance that they can easily brush off. Acid reflux symptoms may get in the way of almost everything you do, even preventing you from functioning well during daytime and having a well deserved rest at night.

Eating with Heartburn

People with heartburn will live the rest of their days with heartburn — unless they get into the habit of permanently washing it off their system. Most people do this with their antacids. While this measure does work, you know that in the long run, you need something that can totally set you free from heartburn pains.

According to the recent survey conducted by the National Heartburn Alliance (NHBA), 92 percent of heartburn sufferers lists food as the primary agent causing their digestive woes. What does this data reveal? First, that a change in your diet can help you avoid heartburn and, second, that you can actually do something that can permanently wash your acid reflux away.

Though what triggers your heartburn differs from the guy buying the very same antacid brand you have just purchased, there are known drinks and foods that encourage stomach acids to splash up into your esophagus. Here is our quick list:

Vegetable, fruit, and juice. It may look and even taste healthy, but some fruits and vegetables are known to do more harm than good to heartburn sufferers. Orange juice, grapefruit, cranberry juice, raw onion, tomato, and mashed potatoes are just some.

Pasta. When you think of fiber and energy, you may want to not include mac and cheese and spaghetti with marinara sauce in it.

Meats. Have a heartburn-friendly list when shopping for animal-based protein. This should not include ground beef, buffalo/chicken wings, chicken nugget cut, and marbled sirloin.

Sweets. Who says you can’t have dessert? But heartburn sufferers should strive to order anything but high-fat butter cookies, chocolate-based sweets, doughnuts, and brownies.

Oils and fats. And yes you can have your share of fried foods too. But make sure that you watch your portions and, of course, what goes in the pan. When you fry, go light, choose healthy fats.

Though salads look and sound healthy and safe, most of them are not, particularly for heartburn sufferers. Aside from the usual salad ingredients like tomato and citrus, you may want to check for salad dressings that are usually known for its high fat content. A good rule of thumb: Oily and creamy salad dressings are essentially heartburn DON’T.

Everyone has unique and different eating habits; depending on which country of origin and residence, what career he is pursuing. We want to highlight the different diets based on different countries and professions.

The eating habits are different in many countries. Food is very important to be eaten at specific time, what food means to the people; as long as they eat, and how great is the diversity of their courts. The general remark is that; in the Mediterranean countries, mainly sweets are eaten while in the Nordic countries foods are increasingly salty.

In the southern countries of Europe it is usually a sweet breakfast (fat cakes in Spain, yogurt in Greece). Whereas the northern countries do like salty foods; like cheese, sausages or eggs are preferred. In Deutschland lunch is the main meal of the day.

In other European countries, where the students are not there in the afternoon from school, meals take place rather than the usually family lunch. The parents eat on the work and the children mostly in the school canteen. Therefore, lunch meal here is a quick snack; cold salads, savory pastries etc.

In some countries, like Britain, there is always an afternoon snack, usually comprising of cakes or other sweets, and accompanied with tea or coffee; referred to as tea time.

Dinner in the northern countries is from 18 o’clock, but taken in the Mediterranean countries however it is only at 20 o’clock. In the south will be more fish, shellfish, vegetables and fruit served, more than in the northern countries.

With these different eating habits you can already see that some people live healthier, in some countries than in others.

Among energy point, we distinguish between two major primary energy sources: the down to earth and stored, and arranged in ascending heaven. In our genes, yet there is a well-encrypted code, which ensures that we align our body vertically between the two main sources of energy. The evolution has adapted this energetic principle giving us the sequel to walk upright.

If, however, as an attentive observer walks through the streets of Germany, one is struck by that, especially the younger generation has almost forgotten how to walk upright. Teens and teens plod listlessly down, with drooping shoulders and vacant eyes in our modern world. Also drawn downwards from the weight of her piercings and her jewelry, have these people for life issues with their energy balance (too much “earth” and too little “sky”).

Sheng-sui can greatly help with specific exercises; the young folks head back into society and – in turn literally – to be upright citizens of the country.

Particularly suitable is the practice; “the tree hugging,” are aligned in all the bones of the skeletal system in a very efficient manner. Through its crystal structure they act like “antennae” that can be absorbed through which the energies of heaven and earth and mixed.

A Sheng-sui instructor presents himself to the user behind a tree, both with outstretched arms to embrace the tree. Within a few minutes energy blockages and the chi begins to flow.

Children and beginners should start with Japanese bonsai trees, since the onset of energy initially unfamiliar affect many inexperienced newcomers. Thereafter, the dose may be increased slowly from the slender birch-up to the mighty oak.

The buffet table is really a feast not only to the eye but also to your taste palate as well. And often times, we find ourselves overstuffing with almost every item we see since, well, it is a smorgasbord of food anyway.

Then, after stuffing yourself, you find yourself feeling that heart attack-like pain. You though you’re going to have a heart attack. And, every time that you hit the buffet same thing happens. You check with the doc. And what did he say? Heartburn. And chances are, your habit of overeating and feasting are coming back to haunt you. So you ask the doc, does eating give me the burn?

Good question. And your doctor will tell you, first, that the sensation has nothing to do with your heart. In fact, heartburn is a misnomer. It’s actually happens when your stomach acid seeps out of its rightful area and just burns your esophagus. But what causes heartburn? A lot of things. But given your eating habits, some foods that you love eating may be the culprit. A sudden wave of terror hits: You picture a celery and carrot diet. The good news? You have greater liberty and freedom than what you actually think. Here’s a list of food that you may want to get off your plate to prevent heartburn.

The Reality: You May Be Eating Too Much

Experts at WebMD.com said that preventing heartburn is not really about preventing a specific food group. It’s really about learning how you think about food and how much enough is really enough. By simply curbing what’s in your plate, you never have to miss a slice of your favorite rich, moist chocolate cake every week. And when it comes to your risk of feeling that heart attack-like pain, it’s really the volume of food that matters. If the lady at the counter asks if you want to go large, forget about it. Moderation is the key to keeping both your taste palate and esophagus happy. So whether it is your favorite burger or serving of fries, keeping things in moderation is they key to prevent heartburn.

Don’t Be On The Rush When Eating

You’re late. But you know that breakfast is the most essential meal of the day. So you pour yourself a bowl of cereal and clean it in less than five minutes. Rushing, and especially eating on the go, seemed like an essential part of this fast phase world. If you spend 6 days a week doing the same thing, chances are you are suffering from heartburn. In fact, taming heartburn requires you enjoying your food, not shoveling it down for the sake of filling your stomach. Three things I tell people to avoid: Grab, gulp, and go. If you want to tame your heartburn symptoms, you must start mind what you and how you eat, says Leslie Bonci of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Be In The Watch Of Fat

Everybody enjoys a fast food fare once in a while. I mean, they may not be the best burgers in town but they do have some great things going on in them. But unfortunately, high in fat foods are one of the major DON’Ts of taming and preventing heartburn. That’s because they stay in our digestive system longer. And, once they linger right there, the more symptoms and discomfort you are going to bear, says Bonci. And, worse, if you are getting the bucketful of chips, fries, chicken wings, then you’re more likely to get your esophagus in big trouble. Again, that’s like hitting two birds with one stone, only this time in calling for heartburn – going for the fatty menu and eating too much.

Checking Chocolates

The main thing that makes chocolate a major heartburn DON’T? The caffeine in it. And, you know better when the doc says to reduce your daily caffeine intake. But what if you have a sweet tooth – just like the rest of us? If you can’t simply resist chocolates, you have to cut back, and see if it helps you with your symptoms, notes Dr. Brunilda Nazario, an internist and endocrinology consultant. But even if you take your favorite chocolate serving once a week, you better watch your portion size too. A nibble, a bar may be healthy. And always have that picture in mind – are you eating that chocolate cake as a sweet, sumptuous ender to a fast food fare? Or, are you eating that rich, moist chocolate cake without having to eat a healthy meal before it? Bottom line is, check what other factor may play in and trigger your heartburn?

When Getting Hot (Or, Cool) Is Not Good

If you love spicy flare, chances are you’ll love your food spicier than most people can actually take. And all that palate-burning buffet items may get your heartburn all heated. Spicy items, hot sauces, peppery food can actually get your heartburn more burning. But it’s not all that spices we are talking. Another item that may be triggering your heartburn is peppermint. Cut back on your after-dinner mints and see if it works. These refreshing nibbles may be cool enough to get your esophageal sphincter too relaxed that it allowed stomach acids to just burn your esophagus. Onions and garlic are not technically hot, but these spices are flavorful enough to trigger your heartburn.

Food Tip: But who says you have to let your taste palate to suffer? Having a heartburn doesn’t mean that you have to miss all that spicy and flavor from your plate. The key is to actually turning down the heat a little. If you can’t have your chicken wings without the hot sauce, try to dip the item in it. Drowning your favorite finger food to a sauce plate full of chili is a major heartburn DON’T. Love making your very own version of hot sauce? Trim down the number of chili that you put with the rest of ingredients. Ease up and cool down. Or do happen to find the food bland that’s why you need a bottle full of chili to take the flavor a little bit? You need to learn how to put flavor in your food. Chili does take the flavor to your tongue. But there are really thousands of ways on how to throw flavor and boldness in your food aside from chili, notes Bonci.

Take Note

Each and one of us are really different, notes Nazario. What causes your symptoms to come about may be different from your mother, and even your friend, says Nazario. Chocolates, spices, and cola are just some of the things that may trigger your heartburn. You may have greater tolerance for coffee than other people. Or, perhaps your body is more equipped to handle garlic than that of others. Bottom line is you need to learn what triggers your heartburn and what don’t. Taking down notes and jotting down whatever you have eaten (or, done) before the symptom manifest can help you pin down what causes your heartburn. Managing heartburn requires lifestyle change. And people will have difficulty determining what works best for their condition if they will just rely on their memory, says Nazario.

Eating Tip: Chewing gum may is one of the best ways to get your stomach work faster – faster than your heartburn do gets in the way. But before you chew your way to a heartburn-free day, choose a flavor that isn’t mint or even peppermint. Remember, peppermint can relax your esophageal sphincter, which, if it does, can lead to heartburn.

Acid reflux or heart burn is a painful condition affecting millions of people from all over the world.

This condition is known to worsen after a very heavy meal. The food items that trigger acid reflux in a person can differ from one person to another. One person’s problem food item need not be a problem food item for another person. Generally, junk food items or fast food items are considered as bad choices for heart burn. As such, acid reflux sufferers and eating out should be at logger heads. Is that assumption correct?

Those who suffer from this painful condition need not be avoiding eating out completely. Once in a while, you can enjoy a fancy dinner or lunch at your favorite restaurant. The only precaution you have to take is to choose the food items that does not worsen your condition and avoid the ones which trigger heart burn for you. In addition to this, the method of food preparation, your choice of beverages, the amount of food you consume etc can help you to stay clear of heart burn.

Italian, Chinese and Mexican restaurants can be tough to negotiate due to the large number of acid reflux causing food items sold there. Even then, you can reduce the risk of acid reflux by staying away from acid reflux causing food items and methods of food preparations.

One of the first steps involved is understanding your trigger food items. In case you are not aware of them already, you can gain an understanding by tracking the food items you eat and writing them down. This way, in a short time, you will have a good idea of acid reflux causing problem food items in your specific case.

Food Items To Be Chosen And Those To Be Left Out

Fried food items, be it meat or fish, are known to cause more heart burn and should be avoided. If you have a choice, get your meat and fish grilled rather than fried. As high fat gravies, sauces etc are known to trigger heart burn, get low fat varieties of these instead. Avoid any of your trigger food items.

Tomato sauce, ketchup, food items containing a lot of fruit ingredients, cheese, butter etc are known to cause heart burn and should be avoided. Onions are also known to affect you adversely. Carbonated beverages, alcoholic beverages, chocolate drinks etc need to be reduced or avoided all together.

White meat is better than red meat. If you insist on red meat, then lean cuts of them would be better. Baked potatoes, steamed vegetables, soups containing broths etc are good. If you use dips or dressing, choose fat free or low fat varieties only.

While in Italian restaurants, avoid the temptation to get your pizza double cheesed. High fat pizza toppings like sausage and pepperoni should be avoided as well. Get your pizza without much tomato sauce in them. This will definitely reduce the taste of your pizza. But it will reduce the chances of you getting acid reflux symptoms later!
