Still swigging gallons of milk and popping antacids by default? Chances are you are your heartburn is not getting any cooler. But the good news is that, no matter how worse your symptoms are, there is that one GERD treatment that can really put off that burn.

Medications

One of the very first things any heartburn sufferer will immediately reach is his bottle of antacids. But how effective can this method be? Not as much as we want it to. If you want a more lasting relief — one that can save you from the grueling discomfort even before it starts — here is a quick rundown of GERD treatments that you can discuss with your doctor.

H2 blockers. These items come as OTC and prescription meds. While H2 blockers, such as Pepcid and, of course, Zantac, used to be the standard treatment for heartburn and GERD, they are no longer prescribed as often now. Yes, they may be the very first meds a doctor will recommend for mild cases, but proton pump inhibitors are so much better in getting rid of painful heartburn and GERD symptoms.

H2 blockers are essentially less expensive than proton pump inhibitors, which makes it the perfec choice for those who are in a budget.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI). If you have a bad case of GERD, chances are your doctor has prescribed you one of these. These meds, which include Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid, is really the new standard when it comes to treating GERD. PPIs are key to better managing heartburn and GERD: One, by blocking the production of acid in the stomach and, two, by protecting the esophagus and, therefore, allowing it to recover from damages caused by acid reflux.

PPIs are safe and effective and even used by millions of health experts in diagnosis. It is often difficult to distinguish GERD from heartburn. But one effective way to do it is to simply administer PPIs. If they work, a patient probably has GERD. If they don’t, the patient may have something else.

Prokinetics. Your doctor would have prescribed one of the prescription drugs, such as Urecholine and Reglan, if he thinks that speeding up the emptying of the stomach can help your condition. While prokinetics are often prescribed alongside other GERD treatments, more and more experts are starting to agree that they are rarely helpful.

While it may be tempting to permanently get rid of your heartburn or GERD using any of these treatments, it is important that you ask your doctor if you really need it. Do you really need to sign up with a GERD treatment? Most importantly, does your doctor think so?

There are many reasons to treat GERD and heartburn. And good ones at that. GERD and heartburn has proven to be time and again an inconvenience to many people. When left unattended, heartburn and GERD can be debilitating.

But how will you know if you need and even qualify to any of these available GERD treatments. It is not really about severity but more of frequency. If you have been popping antacids like the manufacturer’s closing down the production later and you are still having symptoms, you may want to check with your doctor and ask for a stronger, more effective med.

The main objective of the consultation: patients seen by doctors in need of treatment.

Through careful questioning of people affected by heartburn and acid regurgitation in counseling at the pharmacy that may seriously make patients noted they require an immediate medical examination and treatment. Several factors should be considered and be reminded of the advisory case that may be decisive for the need for rapid medical care.

Reflux symptoms and esophagi occur more frequently in patients over the age of 55 years of life. Heartburn in children and adolescents is extremely rare. In young adults obesity leads to acid reflux! And especially in pregnant women, it is more prevalent once on heartburn and acid regurgitation. Children and young adolescents are therefore in apparent reference reflux symptoms in any case to your GP.
Typical symptoms are easy to identify.

The typical patient is a plea for reflux problems, burning sensations that emanate from the upper part of the stomach in the midline (epigastria). The burning sensation tends to behind the breastbone (retrosternal) upward to wander. Often, the pain remains confined to the lower retrosternal region. It can also extend to the throat and be accompanied by a sour taste in the mouth. Everything caused by obesity!

The decision whether a person is suffering from heartburn or refluxbedingtem, relies primarily on information about previous or facilitating complaint deteriorating events. Acid regurgitation, for example, is often aggravated, if individuals are to bend or lie down. In addition, there is more frequency in overweight heartburn and acid regurgitation than in normal weight people.

Obesity is often perceived as very unpleasant (“you can even suffer any more”).

It may also be the cause of subsequent diseases: high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, etc.

If you are overweight, you should therefore seek to find a weight loss. Your expectations of your efforts, should not punch above: There will be a long, arduous, often frustrating path. Nevertheless, your looks, well being and your life will be much better, if you heed the following tips:

1 Be honest with yourself!

First you need to take stock:

What do I eat?

What do I drink?

What am I doing wrong?

Where can I change the things?

If you reply: “I eat all day anyway only one bread” This does not help you! You can not get past the fact that your previous eating habits have led to obesity, which is false and had to be changed!

2 Avoid beverages with calories (sugar, fat, alcohol)

There are some mineral water, light beverages, diluted with sweetened drinks, buttermilk, coffee, tea without sugar.

3 Avoid fats such as butter, margarine, oils, grease on the meat, sausage, fat cheese, sauces, chocolates, cakes, pies, pastries, Forget about foods such as chips, nuts.

You have to prefer salads crisp bread, fat cheese, reduced-fat sausages, grilled lean meat, vegetables, which are steamed and not boiled with fat.

4 Avoid all snacks, sweets

Instead of the snack, when you bear it no more hunger: an apple, orange or lean natural yoghurt.

5 Be careful with salt

6 Eat no more than 3 main meals

You should heed the proverb: “Eat like a king in the morning, in the noon, like a gentleman, in the dinner like a beggar.” Morning consumed calories are burned during the day, evening calories during sleep, are converted into fat. You should save be significantly improved, compared to earlier:

If you have eaten two sandwiches in the morning so far, you now eat only one without grease with a little jam or quark. For lunch you eat only potatoes, rice or noodles waive largely on the sauce, also eat more salad. Meat should not be every day! In the evening you again reduce the amount of bread, do not use fat spread on bread and put only lean: quark with herbs, cooking cheese, thinly sliced lean, thinly sliced ham without fat edge, lean beef, lean brawn, and roast beef.

7 Eat more salads, vegetables and low-calorie fruits

Here are some facts about obesity. It doesn’t matter if you are having overweight or not, knowing these facts will be interesting.

1.7 billion are overweight, of which 300 million are obese as recorded worldwide in 2009. Given the rapidly increasing number of massively obese people, the WHO declared obesity as the first non-infectious disease to the “global epidemic.” Moreover, it is not much left alone, Western countries and completeness.
Obesity is one of the five major risk factors for health in our modern society. Who has a body mass index (BMI) of over 30 is considered obese. Scientists and government authorities are alarmed. In order to put a stop to the problem, it is being fought on several fronts. The causes of obesity are multifactorial.

Research is one part to influence to the identification of gene mutations, which predominate.
It runs good studies on the physiological mechanisms of fat storage as well as on the neurobiological processes that control hunger and satiety. To face the challenges, state and science are dependent on the assistance of media and industry in the food sector. In Germany, 51% of women and 66% of men between 18 and 80 years, are obese, i.e. 37 million adults. 22% of women and 19% of men are considered obese. It is the schizophrenia of a society to oppose the one hand, devoting itself to the thinness and the other things getting thicker. While fighting again in other parts of the world people use starvation.

German scientists are already searching intensively for preventive and therapeutic approaches. One more reason to a specific staff training is to raise the problem of your body. What is certain is that exercise is the key to lasting success in weight loss and especially in the reduction of body fat.

The sad truth of the matter is that any weight gain can adversely affect acid reflux. You need not be obese! Even slight weight gain is going to affect your acid reflux condition for the worse.

Obesity is considered as one of the major physiological problems being faced by the modern world.

The severity of this condition is especially true about the western developed world. In these parts, the sudden changes in life style and food habits have caused havoc in many people’s health and lives. Modern man and woman chose to skip the traditional food cooking and opted for the easier, tastier, oilier, unhealthy fast food. Obesity is a natural result of this junk food culture prevailing in the western countries. Does obesity have any relation with acid reflux? Let us go through its effect on this painful condition.

The sad truth of the matter is that any weight gain can adversely affect acid reflux. You need not be obese! Even slight weight gain is going to affect your acid reflux condition for the worse. According to your physician, you may not be even obese yet! Your BMI (Body-Mass Index) can be lower than those of people categorized as obese. Still, you may feel increasingly severe symptoms of acid reflux as you gain added weight.

As the BMI of people increases, even when they are below the obese or overweight category, the severity of acid reflux condition increases for the worse. This has been proven through modern scientific studies conducted by American researchers. In these studies, as the BMI of participants increased, they felt increasing level of discomfort due to acid reflux. The difference in severity of acid reflux condition was significantly worse in participants even while their BMI levels were much lower than those of obese people. In many cases, the study participants belonging to a group whose BMI is a couple of indices higher than others were facing a significantly higher level of discomfort.

The effect of obesity on acid reflux was known for a long time. As obese people have much more fat than others, they may feel much more pressure on their stomach area than others. This can cause more stomach acids to reflux up in to the esophagus and even up to their throat. This constant pressure exerted on their esophageal sphincter can damage the working of this valve like organ and may even affect its functioning in the longer term.

Every one of us knows the effect of obesity on our life expectancy and quality of life. But many of us are ignoring the warnings at the risk of facing diabetes, heart problems etc at a later stage. For such people, the chances of a disease that they don’t have is not going to tempt them to change their life style. But, acid reflux can force them to change their easy going ways. As this painful condition can affect them regularly, many of us might lose a few pounds and stay on the healthier side. Thus, this new found knowledge can be a boon for people, who may not bother about a healthier life style under normal circumstances. The nagging nature of acid reflux can force them to a better style of living and even to an increased life expectancy!

The following are some of the popular misconceptions about acid reflux and its causes:

Acid Reflux Is Not At All Serious

Some people tend to ignore acid reflux condition as a common nuisance, rather than considering it as a disease worth treatment. But, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) which is commonly known as acid reflux, can be a serious problem for a person in maintaining a happy life. In some cases, acid reflux condition is known to be the precursor of serious conditions like Barrett’s esophagus, erosive esophagitis, esophageal strictures, esophageal cancer etc. So it would be always a smart idea to err on the side of caution and take the necessary preventive measures so as to bring the condition under control.

A Bland Diet Can Provide Relief For Acid Reflux

In certain cases, the contrary is proven. If sufferers of acid reflux get a chance to enjoy their favorite food items, that is seen to help them in relieving their symptoms. This may be due to a psychological good feeling created in their mind. In serious cases of GERD, a bland diet alone is not of much help.

Reduce Consumption Of Protein

Only meat proteins has to be reduced. Proteins contained in peanut butter, tofu etc are not known to adversely affect acid reflux condition.

Milk Can Reduce Acid Reflux Condition

This is not true. Milk has the ability to counteract the stomach acids. But the human stomach is going to produce more acids and bring the stomach acid levels back to the normal level in a very short time. So milk won’t be much of a help in the long run.

Acidic Foods Will Increase Acid Reflux

This is not always true. Many acid reflux sufferers have been reporting that they are getting relief from the use of apple cider vinegar. As this is acidic in nature, it does not make sense. But many users vouch for its effectiveness. The reason for this is not proven through any studies yet.

Products With Caffeine, Spicy Food Items, Alcohol And Chocolate Need To Be Avoided. There are contrary reports on the usage of these. Caffeine contained in green tea is known to be good for acid reflux sufferers. Herbal Tea is also good for consumption. All of the above substances are known to cause problems for certain people. But some people are not at all adversely affected from the use of products with caffeine in them, spicy food items, alcohol and chocolate. Hence, only those people who are negatively affected need to avoid those particular products. Reducing body weight is the only known life style change that has helped in reducing acid reflux condition for certain.

If You Maintain Healthy Diet And Lifestyle, Acid Reflux Will Stay Away From You

Acid reflux condition affects people from all walks of life. Even those who eat healthy food items and sticking to routine exercising are also known to suffer from this painful condition.

Only Those Who Have Excess Acid In Their Stomach Are Prone To Suffer From Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is not caused by the excessive acid production in the patient’s stomach. It is caused due to the malfunctioning of esophageal sphincter. The amount of acids present in the stomach of acid reflux sufferers is on the same level as that of common people.

We have tried to put down as many popular misconceptions about acid reflux as possible, if you know of any which we have not listed do pen it down in the comments section below.

As is common knowledge, acid reflux occurs when stomach acids goes up in to the esophagus and burns the surface.

But, there is no consensus among scientists on the real causes of acid reflux. It would always be a smart thing to go through the known side effects of any medication you consume so as to see if acid reflux is one of them.

Some of the commonly known reasons are discussed below.

Esophageal sphincter has low pressure

The low pressure on esophageal sphincter can cause the stomach fluids to go up. Even if scientists are not sure about the reasons for this, they have seen this condition existing in many patients. Some of the known causes for the reduction in pressure are pregnancy, anti-depressants, blood pressure medications etc. As this type of acid reflux is seen in a lot of patients who do not fit any of these groups, scientists are still unable to fully comprehend the reasons for this reduction in sphincter pressure.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women are known to suffer from acid reflux. The increase in hormone levels during pregnancy causes the sphincter pressure to go down. Along with this, the increasing size of the fetus is exerting added pressure on the woman’s stomach and thus increases chances of acid reflux. But this condition is temporary and will be gone after childbirth.

Hiatal hernia

Hiatal hernia is a problem faced by roughly half of the American population. Most of them do not have acid reflux. But there are some who are suffering from hiatal hernia are known to be suffering from severe acid reflux condition. As hernia patients’ top portion of stomach moves upwards in to their chest, they feel severe acid reflux.

Gastroparesis

In those who suffer from this condition, their stomach contents are not processed and sent to the small intestine in time. As stomach acids are staying in the stomach for a much longer time, they are bound to reflux up in to the esophagus.

Obesity

Obese people tend to feel too much pressure in their mid section. As there is more pressure, the stomach acids can go in to the esophagus and cause acid reflux.

Bisphosphonates

These medicines are used for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis seen commonly in women. Many of these women are known to feel acid reflux. These medicines are known to cause irritation in people’s esophagus and this can feel like acid reflux.

Lifestyle

Consumption of food items like chocolate, coffee, alcohol etc is known to increase acid reflux in some people. For some others acid reflux inducing food items could be some thing totally different. If you avoid such food items, that can reduce the problems. Smokers who stop smoking are also known to feel lesser bouts of acid reflux occurrence.
